Legal Administrative Specialist

As a Legal Administrative Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of legal support services to the United States Attorney's Office, District of Utah. You will be assigned to the Criminal Division in the St. George Branch Office, and your duties will include (but are not limited to):
Providing technical assistance to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to develop and facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation. Analyzing litigation support requirements to develop or recommend appropriate strategies to meet litigation needs. Recommending alternative methods and promoting the use of automated approaches as well as visual means of proof. Preparing computerized trial presentation programs by using and appropriately employing a variety of software packages including database, spreadsheet and word processing applications such as:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Concordance, iConnect, Eclipse, Case Map, Time Map, Trial Director, etc., based on which software would be most effective for presentation of complex and voluminous evidence or to production of graphic demonstrative evidence, as well as meeting individual user needs. Performing tasks associated with the organization, preparation, delivery, and tracking of discovery in cases involving large volumes of documentary and/or digital evidence. Researching, analyzing, and summarizing relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases as appropriate. Preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., witness lists, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and subpoenas, etc., by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and applying practical legal experience. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. GS-07:
To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions:
Specialized
Experience:
One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as:
assisting with organizing case information through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a data base; assisting with the use of software applications for the presentation of evidence; performing tasks associated with the organization, preparation, delivery, and tracking of discovery; and preparing a variety of trial-related documents such as:
witness lists, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and subpoenas, etc., OR Education:
One full year of graduate level education in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law), or possess a Bachelor's Degree or expect to complete the requirements for a Bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND possess at least one of the following criteria:
(1)class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; (2)an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in my major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; OR (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Experience:
Combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required graduate education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. GS-09:
To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions:
Specialized
Experience:
One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as:
managing the organization of case information through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a database; providing assistance to facilitate the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with e-Discovery; assisting an attorney with trial preparation, including making recommendations on how to proceed with trial presentations; utilizing office automation tools in order to create physical and digital trial presentations. OR Education:
Possess a Master's or equivalent graduate degree such as LL.B. or J.D in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law); or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. OR Combining Education and
Experience:
Combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
